Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions patients ask most.

New Patients
Yes. New patients are welcome. To request an appointment, use the contact form on this site and Dr. Miceli's office will respond within 1–2 business days to discuss next steps.
The initial appointment is a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation lasting approximately 60 minutes. Dr. Miceli will take a detailed history of your psychiatric symptoms, current and past medications, relevant medical history, and your goals for treatment. At the end of the session, he will share his clinical impressions and proposed next steps. You will have time to ask questions and participate in decisions about your care.
A complete list of all current medications (including dosages and prescribing providers), a list of past psychiatric medications you've tried, any relevant prior psychiatric records if available, and a summary of your current concerns and what you're hoping to get from treatment. Your intake forms — sent through the patient portal before your appointment — will also help you organize this information.
This practice sees adults 18 and older. Child and adolescent psychiatry is not offered.
Fees & Insurance
No — and this is important to understand before scheduling. This practice does not accept Medicare or Medicaid. If you are a Medicare or Medicaid beneficiary, please contact your insurer for a list of participating providers. We are unable to provide services under these programs and ask that you do not schedule an appointment if you intend to use Medicare or Medicaid coverage. Please contact the office with any questions before booking.
Many patients with PPO plans are able to submit claims to their insurance company for partial out-of-network reimbursement. Dr. Miceli's office will provide a superbill — an itemized receipt with diagnosis codes, procedure codes, and provider information — upon request at no charge. Reimbursement depends on your specific plan and is not guaranteed. We recommend contacting your insurer in advance to ask specifically about your out-of-network outpatient mental health benefits and reimbursement rates for CPT codes 99205, 99214, and 99215.
Credit card, debit card, and HSA/FSA card. Payment is due at the time of service. We do not accept cash or checks.
Appointments cancelled with fewer than 48 hours' notice, or not attended without notice, are subject to a late cancellation or no-show fee of $500. This fee is not covered by insurance. Exceptions may be made at Dr. Miceli's discretion in cases of documented medical emergency. Please contact the office as soon as possible if you need to cancel.
Telehealth
Yes. All services offered at this practice — including initial evaluations, follow-up visits, and deprescribing consultations — are available via secure, HIPAA-compliant video visits. Telehealth visits are billed at the same rate as in-person visits.
No. Dr. Miceli is licensed to practice medicine in New York State only. Patients must be physically located within New York State at the time of every telehealth appointment. If you are traveling outside of New York, please contact the office to reschedule.
A device with a camera and microphone (smartphone, tablet, or computer), a stable internet connection, and a private, quiet location where you will not be overheard. You will receive a secure link before your appointment. No special software download is typically required.
Deprescribing
Deprescribing is the evidence-based, clinically supervised process of reducing or discontinuing psychiatric medications that are no longer necessary, no longer effective, or causing more harm than benefit. It is not simply stopping medications — it involves a carefully planned, gradual taper with close monitoring, at a pace determined by your individual response.
Not everyone is a candidate, and an honest assessment of your specific clinical situation is the first step. Generally, patients who may benefit from a deprescribing consultation are those who have been stable for a significant period, those who are concerned about side effects or long-term medication burden, or those who have never had a comprehensive review of a medication regimen that has accumulated over many years. A deprescribing consultation will determine whether reducing medications is clinically appropriate for you — and if so, what a safe plan might look like.
It varies significantly depending on the medications involved, the doses, and how you respond to tapering. Some tapers are completed in months. Others — particularly with benzodiazepines or long-term antidepressants — may take a year or more. The pace is always driven by what is safe and comfortable for the patient, not by an external timeline.
This practice can serve as your primary psychiatrist, or provide a deprescribing consultation alongside your existing care. If you are working with another prescriber, Dr. Miceli will not take over medications managed by that provider without clear coordination and mutual agreement between all parties involved. With your authorization, Dr. Miceli can communicate with your other providers to coordinate your care.
